Lutterworth Community Transport - Driving your own Car
We have a continuing need for volunteer drivers. Several options are available for willing volunteers who are prepared to offer the services of themselves and their own vehicle.
There are several criteria for becoming a volunteer driver, as follow:
-
The first, and most obvious, is that you should have a suitable vehicle which, ideally, will have reasonably easy access for passengers who may be infirm or have limited mobility. Generally, this would rule out high sided 4x4 vehicles and, similarly, low slung vehicles such as sports cars.
-
Your vehicle must be in a good state of repair and fully comply with Department of Transport requirements, e.g. have a current MoT Certificate, fully comprehensive insurance and be taxed.
-
You must have the expressed written permission of your insurance company to confirm that volunteer driving would be covered in the event of an accident, including liability insurance. This is normally not a problem with insurance companies.
-
As, potentially, you may be dealing with vulnerable adults or even children, the law, common sense, and our rules, require that you have a Criminal Records Bureau check. This is an easy procedure and will be free of charge to you. Unfortunately, even if you currently hold a CRB certificate, this will not be valid for the duties which you will be undertaking and a further check will be necessary. A previous conviction for a minor offence will not necessarily exclude you as a volunteer driver.
From your viewpoint, you can expect to get reasonable reimbursement for your costs and, for most people, there will be no cost associated with driving as a volunteer. From leaving home to returning, you will received a standard mileage rate irrespective or your vehicle, fuel consumption, or type of fuel. The rates are set by Revenue & Customs. At 1st May, 2012, this is 40.6p per mile.
You may then be offered regular 'runs' or you can accept casual trips as and when they arise.
At no time are you under any obligation whatsoever to accept any particular passenger or job.
If you would life more information or would like to apply to join our team of drivers, you may telephone 01455 555571 or email admin.luttvc@onestopshop.org.uk.

We require you to undergo a vehicle familiarisation with one of our senior drivers to ensure that you understand the vehicles you may be asked to drive. This will also familiarise you with the formalities necessary when driving one of these vehicles. Following this, you may request further vehicle time - either accompanied or alone - if you feel that this would assist you. Alternatively, you may request that your first few 'jobs' be with an experienced driver.
